The East Village Opera Company
From New York, NY • At The Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium
Rock the opera with New York City’s skyrocketing musical sensations.
As the first string-plucks usher in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, you settle back into your seat for an evening of familiar musical masterpieces. Then, the drumbeat hits, electric guitars strum, and in the background, a familiar keyboard line loops – not Mozart at all, but The Who’s Won’t Get Fooled Again.
Meet the East Village Opera Company, a powerhouse New York band that embraces the pomposity of rock and the pomposity of opera, fusing the genres with grandiose results. Lead singer Tyley Ross and arranger/multi-instrumentalist Peter Piesewalter co-founded the group, bringing together a five-piece band (keyboard, two guitars, drum and bass), a string quartet and the impassioned vocals of AnnMarie Milazzo to rock the opera with over-the-top irreverence. They perform full-length arrangements from towering opera classics like La Boheme, Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Rigolett and Turandot, belting out lyrics in their original languages and bringing renewed passion to opera through the majesty of rock.
“Yeah, we’re going to piss off some people,” says Piesewalter, “but these composers pissed off a lot of people when they made this music in the first place.”
“The group’s charisma is inescapable and infectious; they electrify the classics for a new generation.”
