The Heart Moves

Peggy Baker

January 19 - 20

At the Vertigo Playhouse

“Like fine wine, Baker gets better with age; more complex yet also more distinctive.”
- National Post

Peggy Baker has been a vibrant presence in the world of contemporary dance since the early seventies. Born in Edmonton, she was a founding member and later artistic director of Toronto’s Dancemakers. She toured internationally with Lar Lubovitch’s celebrated New York company before joining Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for the inaugural season of their White Oak Dance Project in 1990. Baker has performed on every continent, won numerous awards, and now revisits Calgary for the first time since 2002.

The two-part evening begins with The Disappearance of Right and Left, an autobiographical work which draws on stories from Baker’s family history, incorporating movement and text. It’s the first commission by Baker from a choreographer, Sarah Chase, who is neither part of her own generation nor senior to her. Says Baker, “The structure of this dance is utterly original and the frankness it requires in performance is both intimidating and thrilling.”

Doug Varone’s 1996 duet, In Thine Eyes is a masterwork by one of New York’s most exciting and influential choreographers. The Bessie-award-winning dancer and former Varone company member, Larry Hahn, will partner. “Any true dance lover would be a fool miss it,” noted one Toronto critic.
