Calgary Carillon Celebration
Katherine Chi
Even if you've never heard of a "carillon", you've probably heard its song.
A carillon is a unique keyboard instrument that, when played, sends bell voices soaring from the tops of towers. Every day at noon, the electronic carillon in the Calgary Tower plays music that can be heard throughout downtown Calgary.
This January, the noontime chimes will be given new voice with a special selection of Canadian carillon music, curated and performed by Calgary's own Honens Laureate, Katherine Chi. The selection will include:
Carillon for a Festal Day - Violet Archer
The Bells of Peace - Robert Evans
Panasonic #4 - Ray Twomey
Paraphrase - Émilien Allard
J'ai cueilli la belle rose - Émilien Allard
Vive la canadienne - Émilien Allard
Every weekday at noon throughout the 2012 High Performance Rodeo, an hour of stunning carillon song will ring through the streets of downtown. Plus, on January 5 at noon, you can catch Katherine Chi playing the musical selection live in the Calgary Tower lobby!
THANK YOU to all the collaborators who made this event possible:
Calgary Tower, Canadian Music Centre, Calgary Dutch Canadian Club, Honens International Piano Competition, Mount Royal University Conservatory
What they're saying:
"Ms. Chi displayed a keen musical intelligence and a powerful arsenal of technique."
- The New York Times
"Chi's playing was electric, alternating between ricocheting expressionism and mechanistic intensity ... her playing is all warmth, power, command and fantasy."
- The Boston Globe
