Foreign Radical

Theatre Conspiracy

A multimedia tour de force in English, Farsi and Arabic, Foreign Radical won the Critic’s Choice for Innovation Award at the 2015 Jessie Awards.

Winners of Edinburgh Fringe First Award 2017 and Vancouver Critics Choice Innovation prize 2015, Foreign Radical draws participants into an intriguing theatrical game world, exploring security, profiling, terrorism, freedom of expression and privacy in the age of cyber surveillance.

Mobile throughout the performance, they collaborate and compete, investigate and debate, gather evidence, are interrogated and spy on each other. Depending on personal and group decisions, they are at times divided in groups to witness different perspectives on dramatic scenes and documentary media that colour their views and ability to win the game.

“Foreign Radical [invites you to] take an active part in a game that is being played with our rights and freedoms on the world stage. One second you are the victim; the next the interrogator. In the end you are left with a vast number of questions and a dark cloud of anxiety that looms overhead each time you click on a politicized link or when you cross a border. Essentially, Foreign Radical makes you feel like the entire Muslim world has felt since 9/11. Go see it and feel the paranoia for yourself.” — Tarique Qayumi, filmmaker, Targeting.

What they're saying:

"Entertaining, insightful and you can expect to come away feeling very acutely reminded of our shared humanity."
